One of the things I enjoy most about commercial photography is documenting the transformation of a space after months of planning and construction. Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to photograph the newly renovated Whitman Hall at St. Lawrence University following the completion of renovations by Northern Tier Contracting.
The renovation created bright, inviting spaces with a modern feel while preserving the character of the building. One of my favorite design elements was the abundance of natural light throughout the residence hall. Large windows filled the common areas with daylight, making the spaces feel open and welcoming while creating ideal conditions for architectural photography.
Another feature that immediately caught my attention was the patterned LED ceiling lighting. Rather than using standard fixtures, the designers incorporated geometric lighting patterns that add visual interest and a contemporary feel. These unique details help define the personality of the renovated space and are exactly the kind of architectural elements that deserve to be highlighted in professional photography.
Commercial photography is about more than documenting a finished project—it’s about telling the story of the design, craftsmanship, and investment behind it. High-quality images allow contractors, architects, engineers, universities, and facility managers to showcase their work for future clients, marketing materials, award submissions, and project portfolios.
